What to Watch During the Dog Days of Summer

ree

What's going on everybody, as I write this on a lovely July morning it hit me that yes, we have college football in 40 days and NFL in 52 days but what are we supposed to watch in the interim? Baseball is the only relevant sport that is on and I don't blame anyone for not wanting to watch it (especially the Buccos, you have to be a special breed of insane like myself, to want to watch them). So with this I wanted to give the best Drama and Comedy binge worthy TV shows from Amazon Prime, HBO Max and Netflix.

*I am going to assume most people have watched the likes of Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, etc.

AMAZON PRIME

Drama

-The Boys: I cannot back this show more, EVERYONE should watch it, even those of you who cannot stand the superhero world of television/movies this gives a completely different look at superheroes (supes). The story follows Billy Butcher "Oi" and the boys on a warpath to take down shitty supes who are more anti hero than actual heroes and eventually take down the leader of the 7, Homelander, this worlds Superman. The show has a quick start and hooks you within the first 10 minutes. With season 3 just wrapping up last Friday and help my fuck what a goddamn season finale, I cannot wait to see what happens in season 4.

Comedy

-Key & Peele: Key & Peele is our generations Chappelle Show and I feel like people just forget how goddamn funny this show was. I believe most of us watched the show but it's been lowkey forgotten recently. Here's a couple of my favorite skits:

HBO MAX

Drama

-Succession: I just started Succession so I do not know much about the show other than that it follows the Roy family children fighting for control of their media company when the head of the family falls ill. I am barely an episode in and I am hooked, 3 total seasons on HBO Max and they got confirmed for a 4th season so this is perfect for those who want a long standing TV show to watch.

Comedy

-Vice Principals: If you like Danny McBride and were a fan of Eastbound & Down (who the fuck wasn’t) this show is right up your alley. McBride plays a divorced, loser co-vice principal along side Walton Goggins (Sonny Burch from Ant Man & The Wasp). The two's chemistry is hilarious as their characters are completeopposites but it feels like a mixture of Eastbound & Down and the Glenn Howerton’s show, AP Bio. The show is unfortunately only 2 seasons but man it is laugh out loud every episode.

NETFLIX

Drama

- The 100 (Seasons 1-4 Only): This show follows Earth nearly 100 years into the future and the human race living on a space craft called the Ark. When finding out the Ark's oxygen supply is running out faster and faster each day the leaders of the Ark send down 100 adolescents (The 100) that were imprisoned on the Ark for breaking some form of rule. The story picks the fuck up after that and throughout the show the character arcs from basically the entire main group of characters is awesome television to watch. I will say I did finish the show but it starts to go off the wall a little after season 4 but those first 4 seasons are amazing.

Comedy

-Trailer Park Boys: This show is very very dumb but my god it is hilarious. It surrounds 3 bestfriends who basically every season find an illegal way to make a bunch of money, get caught, go to jail then be released from jail. Same format the entire show but its mindless TV for a reason just throw it on and enjoy some laughs. Half my vocabulary was picked up from this show most importantly greeeeeaassssyyyy (Bubbles v.) I am to the point where I can tell exact scenes and what is going on from just hearing a few lines so yes I fully back this show.

Honorable Mentions

  • Survivor: Amazon Prime - cannot go wrong with just throwing on a random season of survivor and let Jeff Probst take on you an adventure of a lifetime.

  • Whose Line is it Anyway?: HBO Max - this was the first sketch comedy show I ever watched and man it is hilarious, Drew Carey hosts a game show of sorts with unrehearsed skits and games for the recurring cast of Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie and Wayne Brady.

  • The Legend of Korra: Netflix - for all my Avatar The Last Airbender fans this is for you, if you haven't watched this show it is the perfect follow up to ATLA. It follows the next Avatar in the line after Aang passes and this world is much more technologically developed than the one we are used to.

We'll end with a Trailer Park Boy compilation curtesy of RockyTopTN11 on Youtube:
