Football Phrase pt. 4: Pigskin

Hello all, I'm reporting to you live from the Summer House in Terminal B of the Charlotte Douglas Airport. Thinking about this game tonight, It's going to be the FARTHEST thing from an NFL classic, so I'm going to provide yinz with a classic phrase definition: the pigskin. The Panthers STINK and the Falcons can be fun to watch in the right environment, but pouring down rain and sub-50 degrees is probably the furthest thing from the right environment. Going with the under and Mariota over on rushing and anytime TD scorer.

Now, the football is THE most important part of the game of FOOTBALL. It's the determiner of where each play starts and ends, who is on offense, and is immortalized in silver on top of the Lombardi Trophy.

The way Ohio works, it is always involved in everything. Everywhere you go you meet someone from there and an Ohioan was apart of the majority of major American Historical events. So, naturally, the plant that makes the official Super Bowl football is in Ada, Ohio. They're made out of cowhide now, but before the ball size, materials and air pressure (mostly) were regulated, the ball was made from an inflated pig's bladder.

It's really uncanny how 1800s-aerodynamic this thing looks. They would blow this thing up inside the quartered, sewn together leather and chuck it around from around 1850 to about the Great Depression (1929, not your personal in 2021) and then they became synthetic rubber.

In medieval times it was made of leather-wrapped cork shreddings. Columbus came to America and saw a rubber ball for the first time and couldn't believe his eyes. Eventually, they were made of real leather encasing a blown up pig bladder and that shit was so heavy when wet it continually concussed and nearly killed many english football players because of how heavy it would get in rain delays. I couldn't find anything on the American football, but the leather "helmets" probably had the same effect (even though I would love to see a Cordarelle Patterson football KO for fantasy purposes).

So, try to enjoy the display tonight. Place a bet on my line if that helps you. But never forget where it all started.
