Sunday from the Couch

This fine Sunday morning I am coming to yinz from a place of hangover and nostalgia. Was watching Steelers v Jaguars highlights and I came across this Jay Critch tweet :

It really made me happy, because 6 year old Barry would be ECSTATIC about what I do now. He wanted to be a paleontologist and dig up dinosaur bones. Being outside, adventuring to the far corners of the earth to uncover history. But then he got a rash at the history museum and realized that his dream career was dead.

But as of today, being a surveyor I’m as close to my dreams at 6 as I could comfortably be. I was always into history (don’t get me started on Napoleon or Rome). Now I get to research land documents to dig up 200 year old property corners. On top of that get to use a machete weekly. Give a kid a machete and from his perspective his life got astronomically more important. If you're not figuratively finding your machete, simply quit. Life's too short to not make the majority of your day and week worth going to.

I get to climb skyscrapers and see the world from the steel frame of a building. Exclusive access to upper floors to lay out and make sure it’s going up straight. I had a “thinking tree” as a kid at the old house that I would climb up to ponder in for hours.

I wake up every day excited for work bc younger me would be. There are downsides but the good far outweighs the bad. Where I’m at now wouldn’t disappoint me at 6 and where I’m going won’t disappoint myself at 46. 19.5 hours until work tomorrow, make the best of it. Happy Sunday.
