8/1/22 - Pirates trade MLB veteran Jose Quintana and reliever Chris Stratton to division foe St. Louis Cardinals for Johan Oviedo and 21-year-old Malcolm Nunez. Nunez is the Cards 10th ranked prospect in their farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. Oviedo has struggled as a starter at the MLB level prior to this season and in Triple-A. In 50 innings over 10 starts for Triple-A Memphis this year, Oviedo was 4-2 with a 5.58 ERA. He has a 3.20 ERA with the Cards this year, mostly out of the pen. A move to the pen for his future seems like the most likely outcome but we will have to see what the Pirates plans are for him moving forward. Nunez plays 3B but scouting reports indicate a move to 1B or DH is in his future. Scouting reports also show Nunez has above-average to plus power and potentially above-average hit tool. Nunez has had a fabulous June and July in Double-A.
7/23/22 - Pirates trade Michael Perez to the Mets for cash considerations. All you need to know about this is we don't have to suffer watching Michael Perez anymore.
7/22/22 - Pirates trade Daniel Vogelbach to the New York Mets for Colin Holderman. In 75 games with the Pirates, Vogey hit 12 homeruns and 34 RBI. He also had a .228 batting average. The Pirates get a 26-year-old rookie right-handed reliever who has 15 appearances for the Mets this season. Over those appearances, he has amassed a 2.04 ERA and 18 strikeouts. Holderman was a ninth-round draft pick of the Mets in 2016. You might be worried that he is a 26-year-old rookie, however, he had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and the minor league season being cancelled in 2020 didn't help his cause either.
